Shortly after getting to Melbourne, I received an invitation to review some restaurants in the South Melbourne Market precinct. I was eager to go, but needed a buddy to lend some expertise, so went along with my friend Iain, known to readers here for his fabulous onion jam and his sensational Chilli Con Carne (which is being reposted tomorrow).
We went to five restaurants in one night – yes, really – as guests of the Melbourne Markets corporation, tasting Dim Sum from Linx Barbecue Yum Cha, mezze plates from Köy turkish restaurant and enjoying drinks at the yet-to-be opened Claypot Evening Star.
All these restaurants are wedged into a short strip on the outside of the markets along Cecil Street and all use produce from the markets as well. While they have been open for a while now and are well-known for breakfast or lunch, several restaurants are now open later in the week for dinner and, whatever your budget or the occasion, are worth a second look for an evening meal.
